Orthodontics
What is orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontics is the dental specialty that diagnoses and treats crowding of the teeth, jaw discrepancies and bite irregularities. Irregularities of the teeth, besides aesthetic concerns, make effective brushing impossible and lead to gum disease and rapid progression of decay. Orthodontic treatments bring the teeth into an ideal alignment, creating a natural and aesthetic smile and safeguarding oral and dental health.
Who is it suitable for?
Orthodontic treatments are suitable for anyone who needs them, with no age limit. The principle is: “Whatever your age, you too have the right to an aesthetic smile with your own natural teeth.”
- Children and adolescents: In children with a narrow jaw or skeletal discrepancy during growth, skeletal modifications without surgery can be applied through functional treatments that include jaw orthopaedics.
- Adults: Suitable for all adults who wish to improve smile aesthetics, prevent decay/gum problems caused by crowding, and correct bite discrepancies.
How does treatment proceed?
The orthodontic specialty works in continuous cooperation with all other dental specialties. The process proceeds with the following steps:
- Specialist examination and planning: A detailed examination is carried out by our orthodontist. The most suitable method for the case (fixed metal/porcelain brackets, Invisalign clear aligners, etc.) is determined with digital scans and radiographs.
- Preparation: Where necessary, decay is treated before orthodontic treatment and intra-oral hygiene is brought to an optimum level.
- Application: The chosen appliances (braces, brackets or clear aligners) are applied to the patient. In cases requiring upper-jaw expansion or surgery, special appliances are included in the process.
- Review sessions: Clinic visits are made at set intervals throughout treatment so that tooth movement is guided and necessary adjustments are made.
Points to consider before treatment
- Oral and dental hygiene must be raised to the highest level. Existing tartar must be cleaned and any decay treated before treatment begins.
- Treatment options (metal wire, aesthetic porcelain brackets or clear aligners) should be discussed in detail with the dentist and the method best suited to your lifestyle chosen.
- Especially in surgical or functional jaw treatments, the preparatory protocols specified by the dentist must be followed to the letter.
Points to consider after treatment
- Retention period: Protective aligners or fixed retainer wires fitted on the inside, given at the end of treatment so that the teeth keep their new positions, must be used for the period recommended by the dentist.
- Oral hygiene: Resolving crowding will make brushing easier; even so, regular brushing and interdental cleaning must not be neglected during this period either.
- Routine check-ups: Periodic general dental examinations should continue after treatment has fully ended. (If brackets are still in use, hard and sticky foods should be avoided so that the appliances are not damaged.)
Yes, there is no age limit in orthodontic treatments. Any adult with healthy teeth and gums can achieve the smile they imagine with fixed orthodontic treatments or Invisalign (clear aligner) methods.
In our clinic, according to need and aesthetic expectations, fixed metal orthodontic treatments, porcelain (aesthetic) brackets, Invisalign (clear aligner) treatment, upper-jaw expansion, functional treatments including jaw orthopaedics, and jaw surgery are applied successfully.
Clear aligners offer an aesthetic and comfortable treatment that is almost invisible from the outside. Because they can be removed when eating or brushing, oral hygiene is much easier to maintain than with conventional wires (fixed brackets). Our specialist will determine at the first examination whether your case is suitable for clear-aligner treatment.
Yes. In children during growth, jaw discrepancies can be guided and corrected without the need for surgery thanks to jaw orthopaedics and skeletal modifications applied together with early diagnosis.
