What is aesthetic dentistry?

Aesthetic dentistry is a field where art and medicine meet, aiming to give a personalised, natural and healthy smile by bringing the mouth, teeth, gums and lips into harmony with one another. To achieve a flawless smile design (Hollywood Smile), the current treatment methods below are used alone or in combination according to need:

  • Light-cured composite filling (bonding): Restorations made in a single session to match tooth colour using bonding agents, aesthetic on front teeth and resistant to chewing pressure on back teeth.
  • Porcelain filling (inlay/onlay): Highly durable porcelain restorations prepared in the laboratory instead of a conventional filling or crown when more than half the tooth is damaged.
  • Laminate veneer (porcelain laminate): Thin porcelain plates with high light transmission, applied with very little (or no) reduction of the tooth surface. They do not change colour with tea, coffee or smoking, and tartar does not form on them.
  • Zirconium crown: Crowns that do not create a metal reflection at the gum thanks to a white zirconium framework, 2-3 times more durable than all-ceramic restorations.
  • Emax / Empress crown: Special porcelains containing no metal at all, with even higher light transmission than zirconium, offering the closest aesthetics to a natural tooth on front teeth.
  • Pink aesthetics (gum aesthetics): Bringing the gums to a healthy light-pink colour and making their levels symmetrical.
  • Gummy smile treatment: Correcting a situation in which more than 2 mm of the upper gums show when smiling or speaking, using orthodontic, surgical or periodontal methods or botox.

Who is it suitable for?

  • Those who want the ideal smile design (Hollywood Smile) best suited to their facial features and lip structure,
  • Those with permanent tooth discoloration due to hereditary causes or antibiotic use,
  • Patients with fractures, wear or spacing (diastema) in their teeth,
  • Those with high aesthetic expectations for their front teeth who want a natural look,
  • Those with greying/grey reflection at the gum caused by metal-supported porcelain (zirconium and Emax are preferred),
  • Patients whose gums show more than usual when smiling (gummy smile) or who have asymmetry, swelling or redness of the gums.

How does treatment proceed?

  • Digital scanning and design (CAD-CAM): The inside of the patient’s mouth is transferred into a digital environment in three dimensions with special scanners. Facial and intra-oral photographs are superimposed in the computer system and the teeth best suited to the facial features are selected.
  • Mock-up (preview): Before treatment begins, the design prepared with models from 3D printers is applied to the patient’s mouth with temporary prosthetic material. The patient can thus see the aesthetic result in the mirror before any procedure is carried out.
  • Tooth and gum preparation: Once the smile design is decided, the gums are made symmetrical and healthy with pink aesthetic procedures if needed. Minimal preparations are then made on the tooth surfaces according to the chosen treatment (laminate, zirconium, Emax, etc.).
  • Production and placement: Restorations produced precisely with computer-aided systems in the laboratory are permanently bonded to the teeth with special adhesive agents. (Composite bonding procedures are generally completed in a single session in the clinic without a laboratory.)

Points to consider before treatment

  • For an aesthetic restoration to be made, the foundation (the gums) must first be healthy. Gum health must therefore be secured before treatment with procedures such as scaling, curettage or gingivectomy.
  • “Naturalness” should be foremost in smile design. Patients should express their expectations, the tooth colour they want and the form clearly to the dentist at the mock-up (preview) stage.

Points to consider after treatment

  • Although restorations such as laminate veneer, zirconium or Emax are highly durable, hard habits such as cracking hazelnuts or walnuts or biting pens should be avoided, as with natural teeth.
  • Correct brushing twice a day, dental floss and interdental brushes must not be neglected in order to prolong the life of aesthetic restorations and protect gum health.
  • With regular, correct oral care, aesthetic crowns and laminates will keep their original form and colour for many years. 6 monthly routine dental check-ups must not be missed.

Yes. Thanks to the advanced intra-oral scanners, CAD-CAM systems and 3D printer technologies used in our clinic, the design is prepared on the computer. You can test your new smile in your mouth with temporary materials, with no cutting of your teeth at all.

Both are metal-free aesthetic crowns. Zirconium crowns are much stronger in terms of durability and are used with confidence on posterior teeth or implant-supported restorations. Emax crowns have higher light transmission than zirconium; they are therefore preferred on the front teeth where maximum aesthetics and naturalness are sought, and their use on back teeth is not recommended.

No. The greatest advantage of laminate veneer (porcelain laminate) treatment is the minimum intervention on the tooth. Depending on the case, only a thin layer of 0.3 – 0.7 mm is roughened on the front surface of the tooth; in some suitable cases it can even be applied directly with no cutting or reduction of the tooth at all.

A situation in which more than 2 mm of gum shows when smiling is analysed in detail in our clinic. Depending on the source of the problem, this is treated successfully by shortening gum heights with laser or cautery, orthodontic wire/aligner treatments, relaxing the upper-lip muscle with botox, or jaw surgery procedures.
