Teeth Whitening

What is Teeth Whitening (Bleaching) Treatment?

Tooth whitening (bleaching) is the process of removing deep-seated discoloration from the tooth structure caused by genetic factors, aging, certain medications, or external factors (tea, coffee, smoking, etc.). While simple stains on the tooth surface can be removed with tartar removal and brushing, permanent and deep discoloration that has penetrated to the lower layers of enamel can only be resolved using professional tooth whitening agents. The main goal is to achieve a natural and bright smile without damaging the patient’s tooth tissue.

Who is it suitable for?

  • Those who have genetically inherited yellow or brown discoloration in their teeth,

  • People whose teeth have yellowed due to staining habits such as heavy tea, coffee, and smoking,

  • Those with mild yellow and gray discoloration due to past antibiotic (especially tetracycline) use,

  • Those who have devitalized teeth that have lost their vitality and turned black due to root canal treatment or trauma,

  • Suitable for patients with fluorotic teeth that do not have enamel loss (wear).

Who is it not applicable to? Tooth whitening procedures are not performed on pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with severe tooth sensitivity and excessive enamel loss (damage), those allergic to peroxide or latex, and patients undergoing chemotherapy/radiotherapy treatment.

How does the treatment process progress?

Teeth whitening procedures are performed using two main methods, depending on the patient’s needs, time constraints, and sensitivity level:

  1. Office (Clinical) Teeth Whitening: This is the fastest and most effective method. The dentist first isolates the gums and soft tissues with a protective barrier gel. Then, a whitening agent is applied to the tooth surfaces and activated using blue light (laser) or chemically. The procedure is performed in three 15-minute sessions. The biggest advantage is that results are achieved very quickly, in about 30-45 minutes. 1-2 sessions may be required as needed.

  2. Home Teeth Whitening: Custom-made clear trays are prepared using digital or standard measurements taken from the patient’s mouth. Special whitening gels provided by the doctor are squeezed into these trays, and the patient is asked to wear them for 3-4 hours a day. The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor based on the intensity of the discoloration, the desired lightening of the shade, and the patient’s sensitivity.

  3. Bio Whitening Technology: This system is specifically developed for patients with sensitive teeth. Thanks to this technology, whitening is achieved in an extremely comfortable and safe way, without causing any irritation to the enamel.

Things to Consider Before Treatment

  • To ensure that whitening gels make full contact with the tooth enamel, professional tartar removal and polishing must be performed before treatment.

  • If you have cavities, leaking old fillings, or gum disease, these problems should be treated before teeth whitening.

  • Any existing tooth sensitivities or allergies should be reported to the doctor beforehand.

Things to Consider After Treatment

  • Teeth are very susceptible to staining agents during the first few days (especially the first 48 hours) after a teeth whitening procedure. During this time, it is essential to avoid foods and drinks that can stain teeth, such as tea, coffee, cigarettes, red wine, tomato paste, and cherry juice.

  • Temporary mild sensitivity to hot and cold is normal; sensitivity-reducing toothpaste recommended by your dentist can be used.

  • The duration of the resulting whitening depends entirely on the patient’s oral hygiene and dietary habits. With regular brushing, the achieved color can be maintained for many years.

1. Is in-office teeth whitening or at-home teeth whitening better?

Both methods are highly effective. In-office teeth whitening offers quick results in 45 minutes at the clinic, while at-home whitening progresses over several weeks, requiring the patient’s own control. The most lasting and ideal results are usually achieved with “combined” treatments where in-office whitening is supported by at-home whitening.

2. My teeth are very sensitive, can I get teeth whitening done?

Yes. Our clinic uses “Bio Whitening Technology,” specifically developed for sensitive teeth. This allows you to have white teeth comfortably, without experiencing severe pain during or after the procedure.

3. Will teeth whitening damage my teeth?

When performed under the supervision of a specialist dentist, with the correct indications, and using professional gels approved by the Ministry of Health/FDA, tooth whitening procedures do not cause structural damage to tooth enamel.

4. Will my teeth return to their original color after whitening?

Teeth never fully return to their pre-whitening state. However, heavy consumption of tea, coffee, and cigarettes may cause the color to fade slightly over time. Routine brushing and check-ups every six months maintain the brightness; if necessary, short reminder sessions with at-home trays can be done every 1-2 years.
